You can become bitter when you allow resentment to take root in your heart. Resentment is that deep feeling of displeasure or anger that we have toward someone because of a past offense. It is our painful memory of past hurts. We want to get even with the other person, but the truth is we even up hurting ourselves even more. Often the other person may not even be aware they offended us. Our resentment may not harm the other person, but it is very destructive to us. That is why the bible warns us: Hebrews 12:15 … Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.
Resentment damages relationships… friends become enemies. It affects our health. We lose sleep, our blood pressure rises, it can lead to other physical and emotional problems. Resentment and bitterness can become prison walls around you.
Colossians 3:13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
When you choose to forgive you are released from the prison of your own making. When you forgive, you imitate the God who forgives.
