Johnson Li—Through a Lens of Faith: Leaving a Legacy for the Next Generation

Some callings begin with a thunderous moment. Others begin quietly in a classroom filled with children and crayons. For Johnson Li, ministry first took root in Sunday school, where his heart was stirred for kids before he ever held a camera.

At the same time, he was a quiet hobbyist behind a lens, learning to see light, beauty, and story through photography. Those two loves—children and images—would one day converge in a way he never planned.

It was his pastor’s wife who first nudged him toward Asia Pacific Media.

“Why don’t you come over and give it a try?” she said.

Johnson hesitated, prayed, and eventually stepped into an interview with Brother Bill. What began as a tentative “I’ll think about it” became a life-defining yes.

Counting the Cost—and Choosing Obedience

Johnson came from a business-oriented family, and he knew that choosing ministry meant choosing sacrifice. The salary would be different. The rhythm of life would change. He had heard that APMedia mainly produced radio programs with only a little video at the time—nothing like the digital movement it is today.

Still, something in him sensed that God was weaving his hobby into a calling.

Stepping into full-time ministry did not feel glamorous. It felt weighty. Holy. Real.

From Quiet Observer to Courageous Connector

By nature, Johnson is reserved. He does not fill rooms with words; he notices them. He watches. He listens. But APMedia stretched him.

In his role, he learned to call pastors, meet church leaders, and build relationships far beyond the office walls. What surprised him most was how naturally those connections came. Conversations that once felt intimidating began to feel like meeting old friends.

Beyond videos and radio, Johnson discovered that ministry is deeply personal—handshakes, shared stories, and trusted referrals that led him to photograph church events and even weddings. Each invitation was a quiet affirmation that God was using both his faith and his craft.

The Hidden Reach of Every Video

One of the hardest parts of Johnson’s work is something few people ever see: distribution. Once a video leaves APMedia, it travels by faith. He does not always know where it lands—in what village, in what school, in what heart.

Then, sometimes, God sends a glimpse of the harvest.

Johnson remembers a Christian school in a predominantly Muslim area of Mindanao. One day, he heard that children and their parents watched APMedia’s videos together for the very first time. They were overwhelmed by the message—moved, stirred, changed.

In that moment, Johnson understood that his work was not just technical. It was eternal.

When Johnson speaks of legacy, his voice softens. He wants his children to grow up knowing exactly what their father gave his life to. Not just a job—a mission. He wants them to say, “Dad, I understand what you did. You helped people. You changed lives.”
